Delivered first cross-platform mobile app built over Adobe Flash platform for iPhone and Android devices

Posted Under: Adobe Flex and AIR, Android, RWS News, iPhone & iPad

Recently we have launched a cross-platform mobile app for one of our client build over Adobe Flash platform using latest Flash Builder 4.5.1. The application supports all Android based devices as well as iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4.

Our client is having an existing native iPhone app and wanted to develop the similar app for Android based devices. We chose Flash platform for developing this app rather than building the Android app using Android SDK. The reason being that, by building it over Flash platform, we can manage app for both the platforms using a single code base and with the help of a single developer. And hence will be relived from maintaining 2 different code bases and development platforms. Also, any further upgrades or modification can be done easily once and for all.

The app has been developed and delivered successfully for both the platform and is available for end users on respective market places.

Hero: Enabling new mobile development capabilities into the Flex framework

Posted Under: Adobe Flex and AIR

Adobe is currently building new mobile development capabilities into the Flex framework. The next version of Flex, codenamed “Hero”, will enable developers to create application experiences that translate well across platforms, and make it easy to build applications that work well on a wide variety of mobile devices. “Hero” will augment a number of existing Flex components with mobile and touch-optimized skins and functionality, and will also add new components that support mobile-specific UI patterns.

Previously, Adobe had investigated splitting off mobile development into a new branch of the Flex framework code-named “Slider”. However, the rapid increases in performance on smartphone-class devices over the past year, combined with the highly optimized performance of Adobe runtimes on these devices, now make it feasible to support mobile use cases directly with the core Flex framework.

A preview version of “Hero” is expected to be available later in 2010.

PureMVC: Quoted as best Flex application framework

Posted Under: Adobe Flex and AIR, RWS News

We have been implementing the flex applications based on Cairngorm MVC architecture for long. With an increasing buzz about PureMVC our development team decided to explore this framework and I would say we are fascinated by its power to create modular and scalable applications.

Originally implemented in ActionScript 3 language, PureMVC is a lightweight framework for creating applications based upon the classic Model-View-Controller design pattern. Initially introduced for use with Adobe Flex, Flash and AIR, PureMVC is now being ported to all major development platforms. It comes in two flavors; Standard and MultiCore. Standard version is simple implementation of the MVC concept while MultiCore version allows multiple PureMVC applications to run within the same virtual machine supporting modular programming.

It offers complete separation of UI controls from model and controller via Mediator pattern. Thus making it easier to re-use code for different UIs. It also makes it easier for multiple developers to work on the same project due to flexible model and controller layer. For large scale applications where response time is crucial, the Multicore version provides support for loading separate Modules within same application at runtime thus reducing the memory consumption at startup.

We can say that it might be a good alternative over Cairngorm for developing large scale applications. It rightly confirms to the title of the best Flex application framework.

We are building more Flex applications based on the framework to understand its benefits over other available frameworks and I hope we will end up in having two very strong framework options (Cairngorm and PureMVC) to choose from for developing Flex applications.
