PhoneGap, a Godsend Technology for Web Developers to Build Native Mobile Apps

Posted Under: Adobe Flex and AIR, Android, Open Source, iPhone & iPad

PhoneGap is the app platform which allows developers to build native apps using web technologies like HTML5 and JavaScript. PhoneGap also makes Native APIs accessible to enjoy device specific features in apps.

Advantages @ PhoneGap

  • No need to learn Objective-C, Java or any other technologies to develop native apps
  • Use your HTML, CSS and JavaScript skill to build native apps
  • Get access to native features in apps i.e. Geolocation, Vibration,Accelerometer, Camera, Sound etc.
  • Deploy apps on multiple platforms i.e iOS, Android, Microsoft Phone7, BlackBerryPhone, BlackBerry Playbook, Palm, Symbian, WebOS and many more
  • Open source and free technology
  • Vast global community contributes to this technology
  • Big players are behind promoting this technology like Microsoft, IBM and Adobe.

Disadvantages

  • PhoneGap is built to support multiple platforms, there are still many features of several platforms that are not available for PhoneGap.
  • Performance is slower than native technologies

Conclusion

Technology selection always depends on your app’s requirements, if it is simple data driven app where performance is not much critical or if it requires widest platform support or if it is simple graphical app then you can go for PhoneGap.

If you app requires high performance similar to a native technology, native UI and maximum device features required with multiple platform support then go for Titanium.

Adobe Max 2011

It was a grand opening for Adobe Max.

Adobe Max kicked off with an impressive keynote by Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch. Kevin announced the new developments for Adobe creative community, the major ones being Adobe Creative Cloud, Adobe Touch Apps and Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Single Edition.

Creativity Unleashed at Adobe Max

With Adobe Creative Cloud, you can stay connected to your creative files anywhere with ability to collaborate with each other. Adobe Touch apps would really enable creatives to work anywhere with their tablets and utilize hosted cloud-based services to share files, view them across devices or transfer work into Adobe Creative Suite software. While Adobe Digital Publishing Suite Single Edition is an ideal fit for freelance designers, small businesses and design firms who need to publish content created with InDesign to the Apple iPad without having to write a single line of code.

Then started the most awaited series of sessions, labs, table talks and unconferences on all topics of latest interests. A huge gathering of participants flocked the community pavilion and took active interest in the happenings on the ground. A sneak peek into the future of Adobe platform took everyone by surprise and built grand hopes to get more powerful tools and technologies for enhanced design & development experience.

Still more to come at Adobe Max and we are delighted to be a part of such mega event.

Delivered first cross-platform mobile app built over Adobe Flash platform for iPhone and Android devices

Posted Under: Adobe Flex and AIR, Android, RWS News, iPhone & iPad

Recently we have launched a cross-platform mobile app for one of our client build over Adobe Flash platform using latest Flash Builder 4.5.1. The application supports all Android based devices as well as iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4.

Our client is having an existing native iPhone app and wanted to develop the similar app for Android based devices. We chose Flash platform for developing this app rather than building the Android app using Android SDK. The reason being that, by building it over Flash platform, we can manage app for both the platforms using a single code base and with the help of a single developer. And hence will be relived from maintaining 2 different code bases and development platforms. Also, any further upgrades or modification can be done easily once and for all.

The app has been developed and delivered successfully for both the platform and is available for end users on respective market places.
